                                                          November 8, 2012

Dear Alternate Route Candidate,

As a result of a policy change at the New Jersey Police Training Commission, The Somerset County Police Academy will not be conducting a January 2013 class.  We have rescheduled the class for June of 2013.

Your background investigations will continue and we will be in touch with you for scheduling the remaining parts of the selection process.  In an effort to be as fair as possible, we plan on offering all candidates an opportunity to be a member of a future class provided they successfully complete all remaining facets of the background investigation to include the medical and psychological components.

This means that successful candidates will remain on an eligibility list until the list is exhausted.  As a result of a new matrix promulgated by the Police Training Commission, we are unable to determine exactly how many candidates will be permitted in future classes until a particular class date becomes closer.

Successful potential appointees will be kept on the list and it will be incumbent on any particular candidate to step out of the process if they so desire and to notify the academy of such a decision. The academy will contact you in reference to any scheduling regarding medical and psychological exams. We believe that this is the fairest and most equitable method for addressing this unforeseen issue.

Best of luck and take the time to prepare both mentally and physically.

                                                        Respectfully Submitted,

Dr. Richard Celeste, Deputy Chief (ret.)

                                                        Academy Director

NEWS RELEASE

ALTERNATE ROUTE ORIENTATION

SOMERVILLE-Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey D. Soriano and Somerset County Police Academy Director, Dr. Richard Celeste announce that the Somerset County Police Academy will be conducting an Alternate Route Orientation for potential candidates in the January 2013 Basic Police Recruit Training Class. The Alternate Route Program permits civilians to enter police recruit training on their own without first being employed by a law enforcement agency.

The Somerset County Police Academy was the first academy in the State of New Jersey to offer such a program in 1993. The Somerset County Police Academy’s Basic Police Alternate Route Program is certified by the New Jersey Police Training Commission.

Candidates who are selected are enrolled directly into the 24-week training cycle, which is one of the most comprehensive in the State that can be best described as a blend of military and college training. The environment is very challenging and requires a commitment to excellence. During the training process, recruits are instructed in over 120 subjects to include: Police Professionalism; Criminal Justice Systems; Criminal Law; Arrest, Search and Seizure; Communications; Emergency Driving; Emergency Medical Training; Firearms; Self-Defense; Patrol Practices; Motor Vehicle Law; Accident Investigation; Criminal Investigation; and Physical Fitness.

Since its inception in 1987, the Somerset County Police Academy has developed a reputation for providing quality training in all topical areas. Over 1700 police recruits have been trained at the Academy, and over 26,000 officers have been trained in a variety of law enforcement continuing education related topics. The Police Academy is operated by the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office in conjunction with Raritan Valley Community College and law enforcement authorities in Hunterdon, Middlesex, Somerset, and Warren Counties.

Post-Graduation Scholarships are available for those individuals with economic need. Those applying will be presented with the particulars concerning the scholarship opportunity. Do not let finances preclude you from attending if law enforcement is your goal!

To meet eligibility requirements, a candidate must (1) be a resident of Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex or Warren County, (2) possess at least 60 college credits from an accredited college or university, as recognized by Raritan Valley Community College, or possess two years of full time active military duty or a combination of college and military that equals two years,(3) have no criminal record, (4) be at least 18 years of age (5) be a citizen of the United States, (6) possess a valid New Jersey Driver’s license, (7) have a good driving record, and (8) be in good physical condition.
